Bargaining a good contract is a union’s top priority. Based on our research of candidate proposals and positions, we’ve identified significant differences between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump that would strongly impact unions. Here’s some facts:
Kamala Harris stands with union members and says that America’s union workers are the best in the world. She has stood on picket lines with us even before she was vice president. Her policies have helped bring new workers into unions, saved union members’ pensions, created training programs that give young people opportunities for good union jobs and increased wages, and provided better benefits in union contracts. Donald Trump, on the other hand, is pushing proposals that big corporations want like cuts to wages, overtime pay, retirement, health and safety, and more.
The labor chapter in Trump’s Project 2025 Agenda, written by the chief counsel of Trump’s transition team and the head of Trump’s policy team at the Department of Labor, would eliminate public sector unions, make it illegal for companies to voluntarily recognize unions, let corporations union-bust in secret and take away unions mid-contract, eliminate the Biden–Harris rules requiring project labor agreements and Davis–Bacon prevailing wages on federally funded construction projects, and more. If Donald Trump takes office, we’re deeply concerned about pro-corporate policies that will make it harder to win gains in our next contracts, and stack the deck in favor of the CEOs.
The bottom line is this—there’s a big difference between the presidential candidates on union issues and the result of this year’s election could have major consequences for our unions.
Make a plan to vote and we hope you vote for strong union contracts and strong communities with good union jobs.

On Tuesday, President Biden visited Milwaukee to discuss the Biden-Harris administration’s progress on replacing lead pipes and creating good-paying union jobs across the country and especially through the Investing in America Workforce Hub in Milwaukee. During the visit, President Biden announced a new landmark rule requiring the replacement of every lead pipe in the United States in 10 years as well as new investments to connect workers to good-paying union careers and apprenticeship programs.
Union members are hard at work replacing lead pipes in Wisconsin and across the country thanks to funding from President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris outlined in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These necessary upgrades in infrastructure are creating millions of jobs while ensuring safer drinking water for kids and families. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible, lifelong damage to the brain and nervous system and poses the greatest risk to infants and children.
Through union apprenticeship programs bolstered by the Biden-Harris administration with the Milwaukee Workforce Hub, union workers are training the next generation of workers on how to safely perform lead abatement work so that our children can have safe drinking water.
Laborers Local Union 113 member Alonso Romo introduced President Biden and told about his work to replace lead service laterals in Milwaukee.
"This is hard work, but it is so rewarding,” said LIUNA Local 113 member Alonso Romo. “Not only am I getting paid great wages and benefits, but I know that when I’m removing a lead service lateral, I’m helping a family in our community have access to clean drinking water."
"The work that President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the administration have done to make the investments like we are seeing in Milwaukee to accelerate the removal of lead pipes is helping create more job opportunities for me and my union brothers and sisters and ensuring that we have clean and safe drinking water," continued Romo.
Union careers change lives. Having a union card in your back pocket is a pathway into the middle class. Investments in good jobs, apprenticeships and connecting workers with rewarding union careers is just one of the many reasons the AFL-CIO has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for President.
President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, together with our unions, are helping to build healthy communities by making needed infrastructure investments, expanding union apprenticeship programs, and connecting workers with lifelong economic opportunity through a good union career.
Labor Votes 2024 was in full swing this weekend as union members gathered at union halls from Kenosha to Superior to canvass, phone bank, and hit the streets to talk with fellow workers about the importance of the November 5 elections.
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Get out the Vote Bus Tour helped kickoff canvasses in Milwaukee and Kenosha. Phone banks and canvasses were rocking around the state. In Madison, volunteers gathered for a canvass and Packer’s watch party. LIUNA held a day of action with canvasses and phone banks.
Wisconsin is the battleground state. Your vote is your power. We’re mobilizing for candidates like Kamala Harris, Tammy Baldwin, and all our endorsed candidates because they will fight for strong unions and the right to a negotiate a good union contract.
“When we connect with fellow workers on the issues that matter to us, people vote with their aspirations not their anger,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten at a canvass kickoff event in Milwaukee. “We have candidates like Kamala Harris and Tim Walz and Tammy Baldwin who believe in strong unions and the dignity of work and a burgeoning middle class.”
Stephanie Bloomingdale, President of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, told Labor Votes canvassers and phone bankers, “unions don’t get involved in politics because we love politics. We do it to help working people so we can bargain good contracts, have strong unions, and make a difference for working people.”
Connie Smith, President of the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, thanked volunteers for all their efforts. “Without talking to our members in the workplace and in their homes we cannot make a difference.”
With 26 days until election day, we need as many volunteers as possible to sign up for a voter contact shift. Join our Labor Votes program at wisaflcio.org/mobilize. We will be busy from now until Election Day to turn out the union vote.
Congratulations to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local 66 and 510 members at Molson Coors who overwhelmingly voted to ratify a new and improved union contract after a week-long strike. The IAM Locals 66 and 510 represents mechanics and machine repair workers at the Milwaukee brewery.
Through solidarity, Machinists at Molson Coors secured an improved collective bargaining agreement that protects work-life balance and includes a family-sustaining wage increase.
WI AFL-CIO President Bloomingdale proudly joined members on the picket line as the Wisconsin labor movement stood shoulder to shoulder with our IAM brothers and sisters in this fight. Going on strike is never easy. The courageous members of Machinists Union Local 66 and Local 510 took a stand and used their collective power to preserve good family-sustaining union jobs that build our Wisconsin middle class.
Approximately 43 International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union members at Molson Coors Beverage Company in Milwaukee voted to reject the company’s final offer and overwhelmingly voted to strike on October 1, as the contract expired at midnight. The IAM Locals 66 and 510 represents mechanics and machine repair workers at the Milwaukee brewery.
Machinists at Molson Coors are standing strong on the picket line, fighting for a fair contract. Workers are demanding a deal that not only rewards their vital contributions but also respects their right to a healthy work-life balance and family time.
The primary issues driving this strike include:
Family/Work/Life Balance: The employer insists on an alternate work schedule and other concessions that undermine our members’ flexibility and negatively impact their work/life balance.
Economics: The company’s economic offer fails to keep up with inflation, does not match wages of other trades at Molson Coors, and other area benchmarks.
"The Wisconsin labor movement proudly stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of Machinists Union Local 66 and 510 on strike at Molson Coors Beverage Company for a fair and just contract," said Wisconsin AFL-CIO President Stephanie Bloomingdale. "We urge Molson Coors to negotiate in good faith to reach a mutually beneficial contract. The courageous members of Machinists Union Local 66 and Local 510 are taking a stand and using their collective power and solidarity to preserve good family-sustaining jobs that build our Wisconsin middle class."
Join American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten, Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals (WFNHP, AFT) President Connie Smith, AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas and fellow union members for a hot breakfast, rally, and canvass to welcome the AFT Nationwide Get-Out-the-Vote Election Bus Tour to Wisconsin.
