On Tuesday, President Biden visited Milwaukee to discuss the Biden-Harris administration’s progress on replacing lead pipes and creating good-paying union jobs across the country and especially through the Investing in America Workforce Hub in Milwaukee. During the visit, President Biden announced a new landmark rule requiring the replacement of every lead pipe in the United States in 10 years as well as new investments to connect workers to good-paying union careers and apprenticeship programs.
Union members are hard at work replacing lead pipes in Wisconsin and across the country thanks to funding from President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris outlined in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These necessary upgrades in infrastructure are creating millions of jobs while ensuring safer drinking water for kids and families. Lead poisoning can cause irreversible, lifelong damage to the brain and nervous system and poses the greatest risk to infants and children.
Through union apprenticeship programs bolstered by the Biden-Harris administration with the Milwaukee Workforce Hub, union workers are training the next generation of workers on how to safely perform lead abatement work so that our children can have safe drinking water.
Laborers Local Union 113 member Alonso Romo introduced President Biden and told about his work to replace lead service laterals in Milwaukee.
"This is hard work, but it is so rewarding,” said LIUNA Local 113 member Alonso Romo. “Not only am I getting paid great wages and benefits, but I know that when I’m removing a lead service lateral, I’m helping a family in our community have access to clean drinking water."
"The work that President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the administration have done to make the investments like we are seeing in Milwaukee to accelerate the removal of lead pipes is helping create more job opportunities for me and my union brothers and sisters and ensuring that we have clean and safe drinking water," continued Romo.
Union careers change lives. Having a union card in your back pocket is a pathway into the middle class. Investments in good jobs, apprenticeships and connecting workers with rewarding union careers is just one of the many reasons the AFL-CIO has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for President.
President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, together with our unions, are helping to build healthy communities by making needed infrastructure investments, expanding union apprenticeship programs, and connecting workers with lifelong economic opportunity through a good union career.
