Stephanie Bloomingdale, President of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, released the following statement on President Biden’s announcement that Milwaukee will be one of four new Investing in America Workforce Hubs designed to connect local workers to good union jobs advancing clean drinking water infrastructure.
“President Biden continues to invest in Wisconsin workers by designating Milwaukee as one of four new Investing in America Workforce Hubs. The new Workforce Hub will train and connect Wisconsin workers with good union jobs removing lead pipes and updating our drinking water infrastructure. Lead service lines can carry contaminated water that poisons and harms children and families. The Milwaukee Investing in America Workforce Hub will ensure all workers have equal access to the skills and training needed to be a part of the historic undertaking to remove all lead pipes and service lines to ensure our kids and families have safe and clean drinking water. The Investing in America Workforce Hub builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s strong commitment to expand and promote apprenticeship programs that empower young workers through stable, lifelong careers.
The union men and women of the skilled trades stand ready to train the next generation of workers so we can transform our water systems and ensure safe drinking water for all. This landmark workforce development initiative from the Biden Administration will help communities and workers succeed in meeting the goal to get lead hazards out of our homes, schools, and daycares as soon as possible. Through the Milwaukee Investing in America Workforce Hub we can prepare, train, and connect local workers with good union jobs that will benefit public health for generations to come. President Biden continues to make worker-centered generational investments -- training new apprentices, building careers and communities --while transforming our nation’s infrastructure and advancing an economy that works for working people.”
