Josef Rademacher, a senior at Madison West High School, has won the first-place prize in the 2020 Wisconsin Labor History Society’s annual essay competition. His parents, John Rademacher and Michele Ritt, are proud members of Madison Teachers Incorporated.

Rademacher describes how at just 10-years old he learned how to use his voice and stand up for justice by participating in the 2011 Act 10 protests for union rights and how this experience sparked a continued commitment of solidarity and responsibility to speak out for what is right.
On May 20, 2020, Josef was presented the award, along with a $500 scholarship and letter of congratulations from Wisconsin AFL-CIO President Stephanie Bloomingdale.

Although the formal in-person award ceremony was cancelled this year due to COVID-19, John Matthews, former Executive Director of Madison Teachers Inc. surprised Rademacher with a presentation of his award along with special letters of recognition from Wisconsin Labor History Society President Steve Cupery, Wisconsin AFL-CIO President Stephanie Bloomingdale, South Central Federation of Labor President Kevin Gundlach, and Madison Teachers Inc. Executive Director Doug Keillor.
