The Wisconsin AFL-CIO joins Gov. Evers in urging the state legislature to update Wisconsin election law to automatically mail all registered voters absentee ballots, among other measures, ahead of the April 7 election. As Wisconsinites adhere to the “Safer at Home” order, we are taking extraordinary measures to stay healthy and slow the spread of COVID-19.
In this unusual election, Wisconsin voters and local election officials need to ensure every single voter can safely participate in our democracy. Every one should be able to exercise their right to vote.
We call on the state legislature to pass bipartisan legislation ahead of the April 7 Spring Election to:
- Automatically mail every registered voter an absentee ballot
- Count all absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day
- Give local election clerks more time to count absentee ballots

Our democracy only works when every voter can freely and safely cast their vote. The above changes to election law will protect both voters and poll workers while ensuring a free and fair election.
