As the state of Wisconsin kicks off the Milwaukee Bucks run in the 2019 NBA playoffs, union members are helping fans celebrate by turning the town Green. Literally. Members of Plumbers Union Local 75 helped dye the Milwaukee River green on Friday, April 12.
“We originally got a call from the City about helping to dye the river green and it was all a secret why or what for,” said Steve Breitlow, Business Manager of Plumbers Union Local 75. “Once we heard it was the Bucks, we were all in. We had a crew of 5 boats and 14 Plumbers and family members on the boats, making sure we distributed the dye in a safe and efficient way. As water experts, we were happy to lend our skills and expertise to help the city celebrate.”
Plumbers Union Local 75 worked with the Department of Natural Resources to protect the health and safety of our riverways, water systems and the public in order to celebrate in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Union members drove their own boats as they released green dye into the river.
“It was cold and windy on the day,” continued Breitlow. “People were lining the streets and bridges with their families. Waving and shouting. We purchased and customized a pontoon boat by installing special pumps and water cannons on the boat to help distribute the green dye efficiently. Two of our contractors, “1901” out of Madison and “Mid – City Plumbing and Heating in Butler donated labor and materials to help us get the boat customized on time. We built special tools to put the dye in, factoring in wind and the outside element. This was a great way for the Plumbers Local Union 75 to do something fun for the city, and use the expertise of the trade to celebrate the Bucks and share the celebration with family. We made sure we did it right and protected our natural resources.”
