Last fall, Gov. Walker and GOP lawmakers introduced Senate Bill 285, a bill that will destroy key components of Wisconsin's civil service system. Wednesday night, the Senate signed off on the Assembly version of the bill AB 373.
The bill would remove impartial exams that test an applicant’s knowledge and skill level and give complete hiring control to the Department of Administration which is a direct extension of Gov. Walker’s office. The destruction of our great civil service system is now on Governor Walker’s desk, awaiting his approval.

Removing the objective testing makes it easier to hire candidates with political pull and connections. The test ensures that public services are delivered with professionalism, efficiency and integrity by highly qualified workers. Our state works best when state workers are hired on what they know, not who they know.
Instead of working to create jobs, Gov. Walker and the GOP are focusing on expanding their parties influence and control by inserting politics into civil service and opening it up for cronyism.
Citizens are the big losers if civil service objectivity disappears. The work of Wisconsin state employees' touches the lives of every single Wisconsin resident by delivering a wide range of vital services like keeping streets safe and clear in winter, monitoring safe drinking water and educating future generations.
If the civil service changes adopted by the legislature are approved by Gov. Walker, public agencies would open the door to political patronage. Corruption and cronyism would flourish. Wisconsin deserves better. Take action today.
Please quit vandalizing Wisconsin.
