Late Friday afternoon, three Republican appointed judges reinstated Scott Walker’s effort to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites. In a whirlwind decision, a federal appeals court declared that Wisconsin’s Voter ID law will go into effect just weeks before voting in Wisconsin’s governors race begins.
The law had previously been struck down by a U.S. District Court Judge who found 300,000 registered voters in Wisconsin—or 9% of the electorate—lacked the proper state-issued photo ID they needed to vote. But voters will need a state-issued photo ID to vote in the November 4 gubernatorial races.

Wisconsin AFL-CIO President Phil Neuenfeldt derided the decision in a statement. “The 7th Circuit Court just turned back the clock on democracy by giving the green light to the voter suppressing Voter ID law. This law will disfranchise countless Wisconsinites and block citizens from freely participating in our democracy. This is a desperate attempt by Gov. Walker to rig elections. In Wisconsin, we should be encouraging people to get involved and take part in elections, not putting up roadblocks and barriers for people to cast their ballot."
Scott Walker, on the other hand, issued a statement of support of the law that will help control the electorate and keep citizens from freely expressing their constitutional right to vote.
With the polls tightening and Mary Burke gaining momentum with voters, Walker is using desperate attempts to give himself the advantage. After all, the Wisconsinites most likely to be disenfranchised are Mary Burke supporters. According to a study from the UW Milwaukee Driver License Status of Voting Age Population, the following Wisconsinites lack a proper photo ID:
- 23 percent of elderly Wisconsinites over the age of 65
- 17 percent of white men and women
- 55 percent of African American males and 49 percent of African American women
- 46 percent of Hispanic men and 59 percent of Hispanic women
- 78 percent of African American males age 18-24 and 66 percent of African American women age 18-24
This decision is already creating confusion for voters. More than 11,000 absentee ballots have already been mailed without proper photo instructions.
