Working families went to the polls and voted in large numbers yesterday. Our hard work on the phones and at the doors made the difference locally and in select statewide races. Voters in Dane County and the City of Milwaukee overwhelmingly voted in support of keeping same-day voter registration, further discrediting right-wing attacks on democracy and voting rights.
Endorsed candidate Tony Evers was re-elected as Superintendent of Public Instruction! This is great news for Wisconsin education. Evers, a strong critic of Gov. Walker’s voucher school plan, will fight for Wisconsin students and work to keep our public schools strong.
Locally, union members who were endorsed by local labor councils were elected to office in Eau Claire, Hammond, Holmen, Madison, Mayville, Menasha, Mount Horeb, Oshkosh, Sparta, Stoughton, Sun Prairie, Tomah and Verona. Congratulations to these new leaders who will put working families first!
Unfortunately, we could not overcome the special interest money that flooded to Pat Roggensack’s campaign. Ed Fallone faced an uphill battle from day one to beat an incumbent. A challenger has only beaten an incumbent for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court five times in 161 years.
Roggensack had a 2-to-1 money advantage with much of the money coming from out-of-state. Roggensack's contribution list reads like a who's who of the nation's right-wing political power players. Wal-Mart heirs from Texas and Arkansas, prominent voucher school advocates from Michigan the DeVos family, and other benefactors who could call in their donations for political favors at any time.
We hope that the Supreme Court can put politics aside and rule with an independent lens on all cases. The future of our state depends on it.
Brothers and Sisters, as always we will continue to educate and fight for worker rights at every chance. Together, we are stronger and our work makes a difference for workers and communities across the state.
