Barbara Peters is the winner of the 2012 Organizing Award for her work recommitting members to AFSCME Local 171 in the wake of Act 10. Barb Peters is the President of AFSCME Council 24, Local 171 which represents blue collar technical workers and security workers at the University of Madison.
Barb worked tirelessly on the re-organizing campaign, making home visits to workers to explain why it is still essential to be a member of the union. She ensures that all union materials are available in the languages of her members including Tibetan, Hmong and Spanish.
Barb uses her role on the Human Resource Design System Advising Committee at UW Madison as a means to represent workers in the “new normal” realm of public employee unionism. Due to Barb’s hard work and dedication the local has had wins protecting seniority rights and fighting against privatization on campus.
Outstanding info indeed. Friend on mine has been looking for this update.
