Congress must act now to create millions of good jobs and prevent layoffs –and together we must hold every elected official accountable.
That is why all across America people are participating in the “America Wants to Work” week of action, October 10-16.
Working families across the country will be calling on lawmakers to promote a real job creation agenda based on the six-point plan (below) and engaging both workers and community members to make sure it happens.
One way to get our economy moving in the right direction is for Congress to pass the American Jobs Act. By investing in needed infrastructure projects such as rebuilding our crumbling roads, bridges and schools, the American Jobs Act will put Americans to work doing work that needs doing.
**Congress is expected to vote on the jobs plans early this week, please take a minute to call your Senator today and urge them to vote “yes” on this bi-partisan plan. Call 866-235-5955 toll-free. **

America wants to work and there is plenty of work to be done. The AFL-CIO has six pillars to create and keep good jobs:
1. Rebuild America’s infrastructure.
2. Revive U.S. manufacturing and stop the export of good jobs overseas.
3. Put people in our communities to work doing work that needs to be done.
4. Help federal, state and local governments avoid more layoffs and cutbacks of public programs.
5. Help fill the massive shortfall of consumer demand by extending unemployment benefits and keeping homeowners in their homes.
6. Reform Wall Street so it helps Main Street create jobs.
And the way to pay for it, as President Obama has proposed, is to restore tax fairness. It’s time for those who can best afford it—millionaires, billionaires and profitable corporations—to pay their fair share to get America back on track.
Cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid are not the answer. For too long, elected leaders have been focused on deficits that can be solved over time, or tried to force a false and unacceptable choice between our vital family protection programs and the essential funding needed to create and keep good jobs.
Our jobs crisis is urgent and demands action now. America wants to work.
