Wisconsin's union workers have been fighting across the state to defend the rights of all workers to organize. Now we are joining forces with tens of thousands of immigrant workers and their families, who march in mass numbers every May Day for their own civil and labor rights.
May 1st marks an international day to recognize and to celebrate the working men and women of the world. This May Day we will stand together with Wisconsin's immigrant community to send a Mayday distress signal to Gov. Walker that something is wrong in the state of Wisconsin.
Corporate CEOs and the politicians they fund benefit from creating a toxic environment where immigrants, public employees and working men and women are scapegoated for the ills of the nation. This is just more of the same old political attacks.
For the past 5 years, immigrant communities around the country have been taking to the streets every May Day to demand fair treatment, respect and a voice. The rallies and marches have brought out hundreds of thousands of people--immigrants, people of color, clergy, and working families -- everywhere from small towns to the nation's largest cities.
This May also marks the 125th anniversary of the Bay View Massacre. A time in Wisconsin history when thousands of building trade workers stood together with thousands of their Polish immigrant brothers and sisters to demand an eight hour work day.
This year's Wisconsin Solidarity March for Immigrant and Worker Rights marks a historic alliance between labor and immigrant communities. The rally will feature national AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and Director of Voces de la Frontera Christine Neumann-Ortiz.
