The Election is Over. Time to Get Back to Work.

The election results are deeply disappointing to the millions of union voters who supported working family candidates. But that disappointment pales beside the years of frustration working people have experienced as we’ve seen jobs move overseas, wages stuck and corporations and CEOs pocket more profits.

The 2010 election was a clear mandate to fix the economy and put people back to work.

Wisconsin Labor 2010 volunteers set new records for member to member outreach in a non-presidential election year.  We have a lot of strengths to build on as we mobilize around creating and retaining high-quality family-wage jobs.

Locally and nationally, the AFL-CIO’s massive grassroots mobilization ran up not only against deep economic frustration, but a flood of anonymous corporate spending through front groups that ran television ads supporting Republicans. According to the Center for Responsive Politics corporations provided nearly three-quarters of all campaign contribution spending in this election cycle—compared with the 4.1 percent spent by unions. Unlike corporations, unions are required to report extensively on their political spending.

With the election over, the fight for working families begins again today. The AFL-CIO will continue its grassroots mobilization, shifting emphasis from the election to creating good jobs, rebuilding America’s middle class and shaping an economy that works for everyone.  We will be taking on outsourcing, fighting for an extension of unemployment benefits to the jobless, insisting that the wealthy pay their fair share and pushing at every level for jobs.
