AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka is touring California this week, fighting for jobs every step of the way. His trip will culminate on Monday, January 11th with a major address at the National Press Club.
Here in Wisconsin, the speech will be streamed live at noon on www.press.org.
Trumka will be outlining the major campaign focus of the Labor Movement in the coming year. Be sure to tune in!
“A job is a good job because working people fight to make it one. It doesn’t matter if the job is in a coal mine or a hotel, a classroom or a car wash,” said Trumka at a sit-in for hotel workers in San Francisco on Tuesday.
“That’s why the struggle of hotel workers here in San Francisco and across our country is so important. If we don’t protect the wages and benefits and health care of hotel workers no job is safe, no worker is safe, no family is safe.”
President Trumka and UNITEHERE! President John Wilhelm were among more than 100 activists who were arrested at Tuesday’s sit-in, which supported workers who have gone without a contract since August. Among other stops today, Trumka will meet with students at the Electrical Workers (IBEW) Training Institute in Los Angeles, where they are learning skills to prepare for family supporting jobs—with a special emphasis on green jobs.
Monday’s speech is expected to build off of the AFL-CIO’s five point plan for job creation: http://wisaflcio.typepad.com/wisconsin-state-afl-cio-blog/2009/11/five-steps-towards-job-creation.html
